<image:caption>Live-work Featuring Amy Archambault February 6 - April 3, 2014 Amy Archambault's site specific installation inside 17 Cox is part obstacle course, part habitrail and part modular home. As both a lacrosse coach and a studio supervisor, Archambault is interested in combining the human drive for athleticism and artistic expression, and encouraging others to do the same in her work. Her installation turns 17 Cox into an arena for both spectatorship and participation. Visitors can either observe her bright, colorful constructions as sculpture or take off their shoes and participate in the various obstacles. The palette for this installation is based on color psychology used in modern workout facilities where colors can promote productivity or increase heart rate. Multiple pathways through the gallery are designed for different levels of engagement and Archambault includes demonstration videos of her performances. Visitors will be encouraged to "work out" in the gallery during the exhibition, and even submit their scores in a time trial during the March 6 reception. This installation at 17 Cox funded in part by the 2013 Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship Grant in Sculpture / Installation. Archambault received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, PA in 2011 and BA in Studio Art and Psychology from the College of the Holy Cross, MA in 2008 where she is currently a lecturer. Archambault was recently featured in the group exhibition of alumnae artist at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Gallery, College of the Holy Cross, MA and a solo exhibition at the Mill Gallery in Hartford, CT. In 2011, Archambault was awarded the Christopher Leland Lyon Memorial Scholarship from the University of Pennsylvania, and most recently, was featured in Pulse Magazine for its "Up & Coming Local Artists" outlook in Central Massachusetts, 2012. She is currently Studio Supervisor and Lecturer for the Visual Arts Department at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA. Archambault lives and works in North Chelmsford, MA.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Score for a Color Field Featuring Floor van de Velde November 7, 2013 - January 2, 2014 Score for a Color Field is an exhibition of Floor van de Velde's work exploring light, space, sound and color. This exhibition includes installations that confound the viewer's sense of perception and depth of field. Van de Velde's use of light and sound, piercing color, and understated mechanics place her alongside contemporary artists like Chul Hyun Ahn, Yann Novak and Eric Michel. Precursors for this movement, like Robert Irwin, James Turrell and Dan Flavin broadened the realm of art to include works with no clear 'object' except the viewers experience of the immersive installations in which they found themselves. Van de Velde expands this experience of traditional projected image by taking advantage of recent advances in both hardware and software to combine light, non-pictorial visuals, color and abstract geometric forms into three-dimensional environments. <image:caption>I've Just Begun to Tell You Featuring Randy Garber, Trimpin August 1 - October 3, 2013 Randy Garber’s three part sound installation, I've Just Begun to Tell You, dissects and recomposes hundreds of piano player scrolls. Partly deaf since infancy, Garber cannot experience all sounds on a normal spectrum. Her installation relates what it's like to live in a sound filled world that contains packets of silence. Garber describes the piano player scroll as a "near perfect material metaphor" for partial deafness, since the holes in a player piano scroll —the absence of the paper—indicate the presence of sound. To assemble this installation, Garber was awarded the SMFA’s Traveling Fellowship, and subsequently researched at the University of Leipzig, the Seewan, Switzerland Museum, the Museum of Music, Vienna and the factory where her hearing aids are produced in Stefa, Switzerland. The installation includes monoprinted, intaglio and hand drawn imagery based on her travels. Garber also recorded the sounds of her trip on a cell phone, later compiling it into a four minute piece projected from inside the installation. It's her hope that the viewer will assemble meaning from the various and simultaneous signs, symbols and stimuli as it relates to the experience of sound and the lack thereof. Raised in Philadelphia, Randy Garber is writer, teacher and interdisciplinary artist exploring interpretation, language and multi-sensory experiences. Recent solo exhibitions include the School of Information Atelier Gallery at University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Opalka Gallery at the Sage Colleges of Albany, NY and Bromfield Gallery (Boston). Recent group exhibitions include Danforth Museum of Art, Maud Morgan Gallery and the Stove Factory Gallery. Prior to receiving her diploma in Studio Arts at the SMFA Boston in 1998, Garber received her Masters of Arts in English Literature and Landscape Architecture from University of Wisconsin. Garber has taught at Northeastern University (Boston), UMASS Boston and currently teaches at Mass College of Art and Design. She lives and works in Somerville, Massachusetts, where she is a partner at Mixit Print Studios. The artist known solely as Trimpin was born in Germany in 1951. In over 40 years as a kinetic sound artist Trimpin has created a gamelan suspended by magnets, a tower of 500+ stringed instruments that play and tune themselves, a six story microtonal xylophone, and a fire organ among other inventions. A Guggenheim Fellow and a MacArthur "Genius", Trimpin has recently exhibited at the Berkeley Art Museum, Stanford and Cornish College of the Arts. Trimpin was the subject of the recent documentary by Peter Esmonde, call "Trimpin: The Sound of Invention". He lives and works in Seattle, Washington. <image:caption>Point of Sale Featuring Zayde Buti, Marc Bradley Johnson, Lane Brandon Phelps, Caroline Picard, Mike Vance May 2 - July 4, 2013 The group exhibition Point of Saleturns a contemporary art gallery into a retail mart. The artists each sell commercially wrapped packages of self identity, examining the acceleration on entrepreneurialism in the art world and the ever moving line between mass-production and the handmade. Does this shift undermine the assumed uniqueness of fine art objects and minimize the artist's hand in the work? Intersecting promotion, performance, and celebrity, Zayde Buti is a Boston based musician and performance/video artist. Buti promotes mock brands and burlesques catch phrases like "Hot N Juicy" and "i'm lovin it". In 2011, Buti's alter ego "Bud Wiser" launched GOYSA, an energy drink company (Get Off Your Sorry Ass). Buti is an alumnus of Mass College of Art's Studio for Interrelated Media program. Raised Mormon, Marc Bradley Johnson's work examines the eternal nature of humans and the potential for immortality through earthy actions. Johnson received his BFA from Brighman Young University in Utah. He recently received controversy when his work, a refrigerator filled with vials of his semen, was blocked from public interaction during his thesis exhibition at the School of Visual Arts, where he is currently pursuing his MFA. Operating under the title Cosmic Giant, Lane Brandon Phelps has organized, curated, and stage-managed multi-media concerts, including Hollow Earth Radio's Magma Fest (Seattle, WA) and the Olympia Experimental Music Festival (Olympia, WA). Cosmic Giant also produces limited edition artist-designed buttons and other small products sold in repurposed vending machines. Phelps graduate from Montserrat College of Art in 2005. Caroline Picard is a Chicago based artist, writer, and curator who explores the figure in relation to systems of power. Picard's ongoing series of packaged drawings tracks the inherited characteristics between celebrity and branding innovation. Picard founded The Green Lantern Gallery and Press in 2005, where she continues to publish slow-media books. She is the Managing Editor for Bad at Sports Blog and writes regularly for Art ltd., Art21, and Artslant. Based in Portland, ME, Mike Vance is an illustrator and sign-painter. Vance's projects go beyond the commercial, including a hand constructed ice cream truck, a repurposed vending machine and more. Ironic and vibrant, Vance revitalizes discarded objects with painted text and illustrations. Mike Vance is an alumnus of Montserrat College of Art '10. This is his second collaboration with 17 Cox. <image:caption>Vestments Featuring Jess Anderson, Julia Csekö, Ingrid de Aguiar Sanchez February 2 - April 4, 2013 Vestments is an exhibition of site specific installations from three MFA students at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts: Jess Anderson, Julia Csekö and Ingrid de Aguiar Sanchez. Titled after noted Henri Lefebvre’s description of "vestments" in his treatise on the social construction of space, "The Production of Space" (1974), the exhibition offers three examples of large hand made surfaces. For Lefebvre, a "vestment" is a shroud or an attempt to conceal a structure's true identity through its outer surface, in doing so, the surface becomes a subject matter of its own. Traditionally, artists use surface as a passage into their work, to reveal the inner qualities of their subjects, through metaphorical qualities of ornamentation and texture, or the connotations of different material surfaces. For Anderson, Csekö and de Aguiar Sanchez, the surface is used to disguise or postpone awareness of the subject. Anderson’s faux wood is deceitful, its silkscreened wood grain patterns distract rather than describe. De Aguiar Sanchez’s collage is impactful, implying volume and chaos while it is nonetheless flat and rigidly patterned. Csekö’s mural of Lawrence Ferlinghetti's work “Time of Useful Consciousness” is comprised of singular blocks of text so emboldened with color that they frustrate a linear reading of the whole. Jess Anderson received her BFA in Sculpture and Painting from Washington State University (Pullman WA) and will receive her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston MA) in 2013. Anderson has exhibited at Mission Hill Gallery, SMFA (Boston MA), Laurel Gallery (Ventura CA) and Gallery III, WSU (Pullman WA). Julia Csekö received her BFA in Sculpture from the Federal University of (Rio de Janeiro Brazil) and will receive her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston MA) in 2013. Csekö has exhibited internationally, recent exhibitions include Galleria Oscar Cruz (São Paulo, Brazil), TAC Gallery (Rio de Janeiro Brazil), Emerson College Gallery (Boston MA) and the British Columbia University Museum, (Vancouver Canada). Ingrid de Aguiar Sanchez received her BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore MD) in 2006 and her MFA from School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston MA) in 2011. In order to find their missing Santa, the owners of the Coffee Caboose parked a truck in their Route 16 adjacent parking lot with a plea for help painted on the side: “$1000 Reward for the Arrest, Conviction and Return of The 20 Foot Santa Claus”. The truck has since become part of local folklore, with everyone having their own opinions about exactly what happened to the Santa. 17 Cox has launched an “investi-bition” in response to the missing Santa. Part investigation, part exhibition, the gallery sent out a call for works made in response to the missing saint. Thirty percent of all sales go to towards a gift of a new Santa Claus for the Coffee Caboose. 17 Cox staff has been scouring the New England countryside looking for clues and additional information. Artists, urban planners and gamers, to name but a few, are required to build, debuild and rebuild their skills as they adapt to new problems. As part of the exhibition, volunteers and artists will participate in Dispatchers Worldwide, a patching of various cracks and fissures in buildings across Beverly MA, including Montserrat College of Art, Studios at Porter Mill and 17 Cox. Dispatchers Worldwide is a project of Jan Vormann. Every gamer gets better as they play and Anthony Montuori's video games are impossible. In Debtris and Adventures of Sisyphus winning is temporary and purpose is monotonous. An artist and video game-maker who lives and works in Boston, Montuori received his BFA at Montserrat College of Art and his MFA at School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Montuori's work has been exhibited at Howard Art Project, Boston CyberArts and Frame 301. Largely improvisational, Fish McGill and Dave Tolmie's collaborative two story mural inside the 17 Cox Gallery shows how necessary it is to sketch over, erase and cover up each other's work in the name of overall progress. McGill and Tolmie have collaborated many times, with Dispatchwork, Project Superfriends and others. McGill received his BFA and MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art & Design and has worked for clients such as Harmonix, Dietch Projects, Nike and others. Featuring Doug Bell, Benjamin Benson Evans, [space] April 25 - June 23, 2012 Assemblage, tableaux and installation art, as well as the move towards performance art in the mid to late 20th century, called attention to the viewer’s presence, size and interactions in relation to the constructed environments they found themselves in. Concerned with viewers not just as an audience but as inconstant yet necessary ingredients for their work to complete themselves; the unpredictable nature of the viewer was designed into such structures by the artists. Based out of Andover MA, Doug Bell has taught painting and alternative materials at a dozen schools across New England. He has exhibited at regional galleries including HallSpace, Clark Gallery and Kingston Gallery as well as the deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, the Institute of Contemporary Art and the Rose Art Museum. Benjamin Benson Evans is a recent graduate of the New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University, where he had his first solo exhibition Role Players at NESAD's Black Box. Of Benson Evans' Coffee with Just Milk at Gallery NAGA, Cate McQuaid described his work as "evocative, disturbing, and occasionally funny". <image:title>17 COX - TO THE MoON (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>TO THE MoON Featuring Johnny Adimando {the·collective} January 23 - March 23, 2012 At its apogee the Moon is about 406700 km from the Earth, while a single sheet of paper is about 0.01 cm high. It would take approximately 1,520,640,000 stacked pieces of paper to reach the Moon or a single sheet of paper folded on itself 42 times could reach the Moon's surface. This January at 17 Cox, artist Johnny Adimando will attempt the impossible: to reach the moon through conventional methods of paper folding and printmaking. Attempting the impossible through limited means has been a fountainhead of ingenuity throughout time. The contemplation of reaching the moon's surface is an endearing and timeless quest: scientists, clerics, poets, philosophers and artists have all staked their claim on what the moon is and how best to reach it. The urban myth that a single piece of paper cannot be folded more than seven times has been repeatedly disproven. In January 2002, while still a junior in High School, Britney Gallivan succeeded in folding paper in half 12 times. At the 12th fold, a single sheet of paper increases exponentially to 4096 layers or approximately 41 cm thick. Thirty more folds increases the height to 406700 km, the moon's distance from the earth. Why has looking at the moon become so beneficiary, so soothing and so sublime? Because the moon remains purely an object for contemplation, not of the will. Furthermore, the moon is sublime, and moves us sublimely because it stays aloof from all our earthly activities… - Arthur Schopenhauer Johnny Adimando received his BFA from Tyler School of Art and his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design where he currently instructs printmaking and critique. Adimando is also a new adjunct faculty for Montserrat College of Art's printmaking department. He currently resides in Providence RI. Press Art New England Flux Boston</image:caption>

Addressing issues such as mortality and identity Alexander attempts to make a continuous story with a still image, in the manner of film and music albums. Using collage to re purpose “forgotten ideas”, Alexander interprets the unattainable feeling that we all share. Bradford Rusick, a Montserrat Alumnus and Associate Director at 17 Cox is a Northshore multimedia artist. In addition to curating Continuity, Rusick is curating at Marblehead Art Association and UForge Gallery in Boston this fall. In tandem with Continuity, 17 Cox is hosting events engendering collage to all forms of cut and paste media; not just 2D collage, but conversation, film, turntables, and other devices/methods that arrange prefab media such as opinions, sound bites, film stills, track cuts, et al. into larger compositions. see.say.speak is a conversation for collage, sound and film artists. hear.feel.fall is composed of audio/video presentations operating through cut and paste technology. <image:caption>Adoption September 8 - 20, 2011 Curated by Kris Anderson Do you feel like you need some beauty in your life? Feel like you are not doing enough for your art community? ADOPT A WORK OF ART TODAY!!! Yes, YOU can adopt a piece of art to help fill that empty void in your life. Ask yourself: Am I ready for such a commitment? Would I make a good parent? Will I be loved in return? All of these are reasonable doubts, BUT DON'T WORRY, because you don’t need to feed, change or pay for college for ONE OF THESE BABIES. All that you need is a wall, a nail and a pair of doting eyes! You can take one (or more!) home today, provided you have the means and desire to care for them in the long run and a stable loving home. Previous treatment may have caused damage, some reparable, some not. Some works need to be adopted together and some will certainly be more of a challenge than others. Various sizes and weights available. Proposed by Curator-in-Residence, Kris Anderson, Adopted is a investigation into the aftermath of creation and the responsibilities of owning a work of art. Anderson is Director of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery at the School of Art, University of Washington - Seattle, where he is pursuing his doctorate in Art History. Following his residency, he will be presenting his paper on The Collection of a Non-Collecting Institution at the ICOM International Committee for University Museums and Collections (UMAC), in Lisbon, Portugal. Anderson recently became a new father - his son Søren is 11 months old.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Desert of the Black Cross Featuring Aaron Colantti, Rob Kaiser-Schatzlein. Megan Schiller August 1 - 14, 2011 On the heels of their Above the Line show in a St. Paul warehouse, Aaron Colantti and Rob Kaiser-Schatzlein (K-S) hitchhiked across the state of Wisconsin to Milwaukee to drive out for their residency at 17 Cox. Joined by filmaker Megan Schiller, they left St. Paul on July 7, 2011 and began The Desert of the Black Cross, a well laid plan that was to be redacted and rewrote again and again. A document of life on the road, including all of the changes and detours that are synonymous with a journey into the unknown, The Desert of the Black Cross is not a destination but a series of sleep-overs and a constant renegotiation of what is necessary and unnecessary, what stays and what goes. The name of the exhibition is in reference to Kazimir Malevich’s painting Black Cross, and his manifesto on ‘Suprematism’, a search for the pure feeling in a painting. Black Cross was a work stripped of every comfort and convention associated with art of its time. In 1913, Malevich argued that his painting of a black cross on a white background was the most efficient way to achieve the “pure feeling” he wished to communicate. By discarding comfort and convention, Malevich argued that one enters a metaphorical desert... ...in which nothing can be perceived but feeling. Everything which determined the objective ideal structure of life and of "art ideas, concepts, and images, all this the artist has cast aside in order to heed pure feeling. Colantti is a supra-media artist working in film, printmaking and installation. A performance artist since his early teens, Colantti now directs several projects including Tall Glass of Milk, a incendiary nebula of rap videos, improv comedy and film expirements. Kaiser-Schatzlein received his BFA in painting from University of Minnesota - Duluth. With repetition to demonstrate a performative aspect in his drawings, K-S uses patterns indicative of everyday matter: steel plating, tire treads and coiled springs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tangible Polygons Featuring Jacob Perkins July 9 - 23, 2011 As we do not see squares in nature, I thought that it is man-made. But I have corrected myself. Because squares exist in salt crystals, our daily salt. - Josef Albers Perkins is notorious for building up a surface and tearing it down again, or burying it and excavating it years later. Using memory as a means of creation, he produces work that explores patterns in color ultimately making tangible shapes. His thick textures are created naturally over a long period time. While many painters are known for this, Perkins does it to a degree that is almost unending, as he solves one area of the canvas, but has to paint over that area to solve the entire canvas. This July, Northwest painter Jacob Perkins will produce a new body of work during his residency at 17 Cox. Perkins, an alumnus of the UW Seattle - School of Art, has exhibited around the Northwest from Portland OR to Vancouver BC. Recently moving to Brooklyn, his residency will be his first exhibition on the East Coast en route to his next residency at Centre d'Art - Marnay Art Centre, France.</image:caption>

The show will open concurrently with Ekphrastic Fantastic, a poetry reading inspired by the works in the exhibition by the Improbable Places Poetry Tour. Spivey and Pardoe have selected 8 artists (4 each) who are outstanding as both artists and individuals. Straight-forwardness, integrity and affability are qualities that behoove any individual, artist or not; and are of particular use to the cultural institutions and proceedings that work with artists. What defines good art and good character? Good Work(s) explores the subjectivity of these two cultural willow-the-wisps. The Improbable Places Poetry Tour is a traveling performance of revolving writers organized by Colleen Michaels. Each month Michaels selects an improbable place for poetry readings and bases the call to poets on that space. For May's event, IPPT poems are in response to the artwork in the Good Work(s) show at 17 Cox.</image:caption>

Highlighting the commonality of "playfulness" in these artists' bodies of work, Play at Work explores the rebellious escapism of artmaking in the work-a-day lives of post college artists. As their professional and artistic careers become more serious, the element of play is a chief motivator to continue their artistic practice beyond their shared alma mater. Loosely encapsulating their strides since graduation, this exhibition demonstrates the intersection of work and play that has made Montserrat a wellspring for artists in New England. Adam Kology and Chris Stepler are both recent Montserrat Alumni. This is their first curatorial project together.</image:caption>

<image:caption>POST NO BILLS Featuring Kevin Quinn, Jacob Cassevoy March 2 – 5, 2011 This March at 17 Cox, Jake Cassevoy and Kevin Quinn, seniors at Montserrat College of Art, blend pop and counter culture into interactive art installations. Curated by Lucas Spivey, POST NO BILLS explores the intersect of conventional beauty and the discarded through video projection, performance and found object installations. Like Ilya Kabekov and Edward Keinholz, Cassevoy's installation work unites the traditional separations of art and life, leaving the viewer unable to decipher what is found object, altered object and crafted object. Cassevoy invites the viewer to interact with towel dispensers, newspaper machines and other objects outside of their typical locales, confronting, implicating and captivating the audience into touching "hot" objects. Cassevoy's painstaking repetition and visible hand burlesque the industrial processes used to create objects of art, worship and patriotism. Quinn's prodigious output and sincere work ethic turns the stereotype of youth counterculture on its head. Altering skateboards into machines of art-making, an embedded spraypaint can is operated by Quinn through a foot pedal creating beauty through recreation. Treading the footstep’s of Dietsch Project’s "Session the Bowl", Quinn creates on a quarter pipe built into the gallery, alongside a video projection of the works in progress. Quinn's endless tinkering and ingenuity paired with beautiful linework contradict the assumptions made about youth, notions of beauty and the myths of skateboarding culture.</image:caption>

<image:title>17 COX GALLERY - Vestments (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Start Over Featuring Anthony Montuori, Fish McGill, Dave Tolmie, Dispatchers Worldwide August 11 - October 7, 2012 Start Over is a cross-section of 'revisionists', whose occupation requires a constant striking and editing. Tolmie has exhibited under his psedunymn LEGO, at MEME Gallery, Fourth Wall Project, Massachusettes College of Art and Design and donated works to Spero Inc., Cambridge Nursery School and other local schools. <image:caption>You Are Here! <image:title>17 COX GALLERY - TO THE MoON (Copy)</image:title>

Get Lost and Get Found takes the twelve parts of a business plan and translates it into language that artists can understand, and maps their business plan as a personal journey to an authentic way of life.</image:caption>
