THE LANDSomewhere in the Paleozoic Era a combination of marine deposition and tectonic uplift formed what would become the Ozark Mountains. 300 - 500 million years of erosion carved rolling hills and rocky glades of chert, limestone and shale.
Over the millennia wooly mammoths, mastodons, giant ground sloths, saber-toothed cats, and dire wolves have called this land home, along with the future state dinosaur Arkansaurus Fridayi. The oldest known human records date back to circa 700 - 800 AD with Caddo, Osage, and Quapaw Nations. France claimed ownership of the land and then sold it to the USA in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
In 1901, a health resort was built on the western most shores of Beaver Lake. The damming of White River in 1966 changed this shoreline, and the ruins can still be seen below the surface before the spring rains.
THE JOURNEYI first visited NW Arkansas in 2016 on the first leg of what would become a road trip to 48 states. By 2020 I had a documentary tour with stops scheduled in dozens of US cities. I spent that spring buying and building mobile recording studios, but when my sponsors cancelled because of Covid I was left broke and wandering the US living out of those studios.
From 2020-2022 I had just three sponsors, all of them in the Ozarks. I took the hint and bought a permanent campsite. I had mixed feelings about the concept of owning land, but the first night I slept here I woke up to the birds and had a brand new feeling: home.
