“Note to Self” is a series of 365 affirmations to different parts of myself. It started when I was 15, struggling with depression, and my Ma gave me a book she’d been given when she was 15 entitled “Daily Affirmations”. I’ve read it regularly my entire life.

I began writing my own affirmations after a period of massive loss. It started with a divorce on January 1, 2020, then my dad went back to prison, Covid struck and my documentary tour was cancelled (losing $35,000 in sponsorships in a week), then my dog died, my camper was broken into, then my truck was smashed, then my friend committed suicide, then I was assaulted, I had three surgeries, then three of my grandparents died… all this in a period of 2 years.

I became so depressed I couldn’t move, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t get out of bed, couldn’t speak, and I couldn’t stop crying. The memories of my grandparents began speaking for me in short, affirmative, loving words. I began writing these down.

Each affirmation is one minute long, and uses “I” statements so the reader can speak them for themselves. I am nearly half way to 365 affirmations, at which point I will publish a book containing the words and doodles.
